Turf Cutting

My husband has very fond memories of childhood holidays spent in Ireland over 50 years ago and this spring we are planning a trip so that he can show me this beautiful country.
He has talked at length about going out with a man and his donkey to collect peat. Is it still possible to see people cutting and collecting peat?

Welcome to our community and what a lovely trip you have coming up this spring, going to see where your husband spent his childhood.

It's absolutely still possible to see turf cutting and processing, it is quite an amazing craft and fortunately it has been preserved in many ways.

Turf Bog Tours in Donegal is a working Irish turf bog and you can even try your hand at turf cutting yourself.

There is also the Island Turf Crafts Visitor Centre, which doesn't have turf cutting demonstrations, but has an extensive exhibition and turf museum.

Where in Ireland would you be planning on visiting during your trip?

I will have a look at the Turf Bog Tours. We are planning to start in Dublin and then travel south and up the west coast.
