Hello Chaim,

How lovely that you'll be visiting our green isle in June, it's a great time of the year to visit!

Driving in Ireland is a little bit different from driving in Israel, but you'll get used to it in no time! Roads in Ireland are generally of a high standard and driving in Ireland is on the left hand side of the road. All passengers are required to wear seat belts at all times in both the front and back of the vehicle. Car rental companies will require a valid national driving licence, issued in the country of your permanent residence.

Have you decided what places you'll be visiting on your holidays yet? We have a host of inspiration on our website, ranging from driving tours such as the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland's Ancient East.

Wishing you a wonderful day,
Cornelia

Dear Chiam,

June is indeed a lovely month to visit Ireland.  You mention that you plan to spend 10 days here and I was wondering if you might travel up to Northern Ireland to explore the most northerly part of the island? The roads continue to be good here and when you cross into Northern Ireland the road signs change from kilometres per hour to miles per hour. The currency in Northern Ireland is pounds sterling and in the South it is euros.

There is a drive extending from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry in the north west that takes in the beautiful, rugged coastline. It is called the Causeway Coastal Route. The popular HBO series Game of Thrones has been filmed at quite a few locations along the route and there are plenty of places to stop and explore. The area also has some great walks.

The following are some ideas of things to see here.  Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge near Ballintoy is a popular tourist attraction and has been even used in a Guinness advert!  The Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a great visitor centre with a café, shop and information area. Experienced rangers take visitors on guided tours to explore the unique hexagonal stone formations of the Causeway.  About 5 miles to the west along the A2, you can visit Dunluce Castle, a well preserved ruin built in medieval times. It is perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Bushmills Whiskey Distillery nearby runs excellent tours and tastings.

There's lots of good pubs, restaurants and accommodation options to chose from in the towns and villages dotted along the route. To find out more please visit our web site: www.visitcausewaycoastandglens.com

I hope you have a super holiday in June!
Anne

I haven't considered this at all. I think we were just planning on taking cabs/taxis. I would imagine ubers are over there as well. We went the UK in 2013 and didn't even think of driving. I think the way to go is hiring a service.

Hi James,

Welcome to the conversation!

Regarding The Causeway Coastal Route there are many possibilities as regards tours to see the sights of this beautiful coastline.  There are day trips from Belfast or day trips from Coleraine or Ballycastle. There are also tours focussing on the Game of Thrones locations.

You can see more details about these and other themed tours by visiting our website

https://www.visitcausewaycoastandglens.comand clicking on To Do and then Tours.

The train journey from Coleraine to Derry/Londonderry is a particularly scenic one, hugging first the bank of the River Bann, then the coastline for most of its journey.  At one point it goes through two tunnels – one of which is right through the cliff on which the Mussenden Temple sits.

There are many ways to visit and experience this part of Ireland without having to drive yourself.

Mary.

Hi Chaim,

How was your experience driving on the left? Where did you go during your 10 day trip? I'm sure many people could use some tips and discover new places thanks to you!

Best Regards,

Jorge
