Hi all, I’ve hit a wall trying to find an ancestor of mine. His name was John Bradshaw and he was born around 1805. He emigrated to the US and died around 1854. One of his some was George Washington Bradshaw (b 1847, d 1918) and he was very well documented so I’m firm on him. Some records indicate that John was born in Louth but I can find no record of it. I’m visiting Ireland in June and would love to be able to confirm where he was born or where his parents lived. Thank you in advance!!

Hi Austin,

The information that you have on your ancestor in America is a super place to start!

The information on County Louth is important to know as before 1864 records are kept at genealogical centres based on the County. Please have a look at Lough County Council pages for research information and services that are available.

Would you have any birth, marriage and death certificates that you can use to confirm John's Irish background? These types of documents are extremely worthwhile when tracing family history.

With some additional information, a trip over to see us in June would be a lovely way to see the places where your ancestors lived prior to leaving to start a new life overseas.

Speak soon,

Hi Martin,

Those are, in fact the very documents I’m looking for. I have a US census that proves he was born in Ireland (no city or county specified) and as of 1850 he was 45 years old. I do have a US marriage register showing he married Ruth Emily Smith too. Would that help?

if I had to guess John came over whenever he was young probably around 17 and began his life here in the US after that.

Hi Brian,
I went ahead and got a subscription so i could see the results and it yielded a couple of possibilities when i marry the results with my DNA locations. I’m going to keep researching...thanks!
