The island of Ireland has too many museums to count, and even though they are closed at the moment, you can still explore some of our most famous galleries and museums from the comfort of your home with these virtual tours.

The Long Room - Trinity College

The main chamber of the Old Library is the Long Room; at nearly 65 metres in length, it is filled with 200,000 of the Library’s oldest books and is one of the most impressive libraries in the world. In this video, you get an impression of how big the Long Room is, and what it’s like to walk along the many books and busts.

EPIC - The Irish Emigration Museum

Ireland has a population of around 6.3 million, but it is estimated that 50 to 80 million people around the world have Irish roots, making the Irish diaspora one of the largest of any nation. EPIC is the Irish Emigration Museum, and definitely a must-see while you’re in Dublin. Click here for the virtual tour.

If you’d like to start searching for your own Irish roots, make sure to take a look at the Genealogy section here on the Community.

The National Gallery

In the National Gallery of Ireland, you can find a great collection of Irish and European art spanning the 14th to the 20th-century, covering all major schools. Exploring the gallery, both digitally and in real life, is free of charge. Take the virtual tour here

National Museum of Ireland - Natural History

The Natural History collections comprise approximately two million specimens, and you can explore all 4 floors with this digital tour

The Chester Beatty

The Chester Beatty is a museum and library in Dublin. Formerly known as the Chester Beatty Library, it was established in Ireland in 1950, to house the collections of mining magnate Sir Alfred Chester Beatty. This virtual tour shows you everything from Egyptian Books of the Dead to contemporary Chinese woodblock prints, and it even has a VR mode!

Medieval Museum Waterford

Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, founded by ancient Vikings. The Medieval Museum is dedicated to rare and incredible artefacts found here, that date from the 13th century. Step into Medieval history by seeing the only surviving piece of King Henry VIII’s wardrobe and the Cloth of Gold Vestments in this virtual tour.

Do you have a favourite museum or gallery on the island?
