Two recommendations in Ireland's HIdden Heartlands that I have very fond memories of would have to be The Shannon Blueway and Portumna Forest Park! Both of these spots are perfect for people of all ages and a great way to have a relaxing day in nature.

Let's start with the Shannon Blueway. It is a picturesque network of water and land trails along the majestic River Shannon. It provides a tranquil setting for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike! There are so many things to do...

Water-Based Activities: Kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding are popular activities along the Shannon Blueway. The calm waters of the river offer a serene environment for water adventures suitable for all skill levels.

Walking and Cycling Trails: Explore the scenic landscapes on foot or by bike along the well-maintained trails that meander through lush greenery. The trails are family-friendly and provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region.

Lough Key to Boyle Trail: One highlight is the Lough Key to Boyle trail, where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll or cycle along the water's edge, taking in the peaceful ambiance and diverse flora and fauna.

Wildlife Watching: The Shannon Blueway is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for native bird species, and if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the river's resident otters.

Portumna Forest Park is nestled in County Galway offering a harmonious blend of woodlands, waterways, and recreational activities.

Walking and Cycling Trails: The park features a network of well-marked trails suitable for both walking and cycling. Choose from short family-friendly walks to more extended hikes, allowing you to explore the diverse landscapes, including dense woodlands and open spaces.

Lough Derg Views: Enjoy stunning views of Lough Derg, one of Ireland's largest lakes, as you navigate the trails within the forest park. The serene lake provides a picturesque backdrop to your outdoor adventures.

Adventure Playground: Families with children will appreciate the adventure playground, where little ones can expend their energy and have fun in a safe and natural setting.

Portumna Castle and Gardens: Explore the nearby Portumna Castle and its beautifully maintained gardens. The castle is a striking example of Jacobean architecture, and the gardens offer a peaceful retreat for a leisurely stroll.

Marina Facilities: The park is equipped with marina facilities, making it a popular spot for boating enthusiasts. You can rent boats or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere by the water's edge.

Both the Shannon Blueway and Portumna Forest Park provide an idyllic escape into nature, offering a range of activities for visitors of all ages. Whether you prefer a leisurely walk, a cycling adventure, or water-based exploration, these destinations are a great example of the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that Ireland's Hidden Heartlands are known for!
