Spring in Ireland brings new life to our countryside and coast, making it a good time to spot wildlife. From puffins and lambs to whales along the coast, there are many opportunities to see nature up close. Here’s where and how to experience Ireland’s wildlife responsibly.

1. Where to See Puffins in Ireland
Puffins return to Ireland in spring to nest on cliffs and islands. These stunning birds are usually visible between April and late early August, the best time being from May to mid-July.

- Skellig Michael, Co. Kerry – A well-known nesting site, best viewed by boat from Portmagee. Note that tickets for landing tours are limited.
- Great Saltee Island, Co. Wexford – A private island open to visitors, offering close views of puffins.
- Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare – Home to puffins and other seabirds, with viewing points along the coastal walk.
- Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim

💡 Tip: Bring binoculars to watch without disturbing them.

2. Experience Lambing Season in the Countryside
Lambing season in spring is a common sight in rural areas.

- Glenmalure Valley, Co. Wicklow – A scenic area where lambs can be seen in fields.
- The Burren, Co. Clare – A mix of newborn lambs and wildflowers.
- Farm Visits – Some farms allow visitors to see or feed lambs, like Leahy’s Open Farm (Co. Cork) Causey Farm (Co. Meath) or Hold a Baby Lamb experience (Dingle, Co. Kerry)

💡 Tip: Follow farm rules and avoid stressing the animals.

3. Whale and Dolphin Watching Along Ireland’s Coast
Spring is a good time to see whales and dolphins off the Irish coast. Although, you are in luck since the best time for whale watching in Ireland is from April to November, with peak sightings from June to September.

- West Cork (Baltimore & Cape Clear Island) – Boat tours offer views of humpback and minke whales.
- Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry – Known for marine life and once home of Fungie the Dolphin, with still plenty of regular dolphin sightings. You can also consider a boat tour to the Blasket Islands.
- Loop Head, Co. Clare – A land-based viewing point for whale watching.

💡 Tip: Choose boat tours that follow responsible wildlife guidelines.

In conclusion, Spring is a good time to see Ireland’s wildlife, from puffins to whales. It will undoubtedly please the entire family! I cannot stress enough that visiting these places with care helps protect nature while allowing you to enjoy it.
