As winter comes rolling towards Ireland, you’ll often hear people remark that "the evenings are closing in”. But just because the nights are coming earlier, and the cold is beginning to nip at your ears, it doesn’t mean you can’t have a lot of fun. There are some wonderful wintertime festivals that take place right across the island.
Try staying off the cold by experiencing something new, at the Tralee Circus Festival (November 10th-13th). This festival brings high-flying feats of acrobatic expertise and awe-inspiring aerial work. Acts this year include Brian Crabtree, who makes music out of anything and everything he touches, and Leah Wolff, the aerial hoop artist extraordinaire who flies through the sky with impeccable grace and beauty.
Set in the beautiful and boisterous St George’s Market, head to Belfast for the night market. All year round, this market brings the best in local artisan produce, but on November 8th and 9th, the market opens late to celebrate Northern Ireland’s Year of Food & Drink with an impeccable selection of over 130 local food, drink, and craft traders at their Twilight Market. The atmosphere is simply electric, as you sample Ulster specialities, wander the aisles to meet the traders, and discover Belfast’s hidden secrets.
And finally, if you want to take in a true taste of Ireland’s traditional culture, travel to Gweedore along the northern coast of Donegal. The Scoil Gheimridh takes place from December 27th until January 1st, and features a feast of traditional Irish music, dance, language courses, films, and concerts. In this tiny town, cupped against the wild Atlantic ocean, get a real sample of old Ireland, and the foundations of the fabulous culture it’s built upon.
Overall, don’t let Ireland’s reputation for weather put you off visiting during the winter time – sometimes it rains, sure, but there’s so much to do, and the island comes alive in front of crackling fires, as we tell tales and celebrate what makes Ireland amazing!
