Looking for my ancestors Agnes or Mary Holmes who was married to William McCulloch

I am currently researching my great x 3 grandmother who was named either Agnes or Mary Holmes and married to William McCulloch who also may have been born in Ireland, but died in Partick, Glasgow on the 13th May 1900.

Agnes Holmes was born in Ireland around 1835 and died in 1872. I do not have information on when or where she was born in Ireland. She had a son named David Holmes McCulloch who was also born in Ireland in 1858.

I do not have much information to go on and was wondering if anyone knows how to obtain an Irish birth/marriage certificate for these individuals.

Hi Callum

As you hold no clues as to where in Ireland your ancestors are from your best bet is to examine the 'big' Irish databases such as http://www.irishgenealogy.ie and http://rootsireland.ie for potential entries of interest.

I note for example in using free index search at http://www.rootsireland.ie that it holds details of a marriage of a William McCullogh to a bride with surname Holmes in County Armagh in 1841 and birth of a David McCullagh in 1851 in County Armagh to a father with forename William and mother with surname Holmes. It is well known in Ireland that there are many spelling variations of the same surname!

It must be emphasised, however, that a failure to find relevant birth/marriage entries in a database doesn't mean that the events you are looking for didn't happen in Ireland. It simply means that they are not recorded in the database; for example, they may be recorded in a record source which doesn't survive for the time period of interest or in a source that has not been computerised.

Thanks for your replies, your help is much appreciated. I have enclosed a picture of my ancestor William McCulloch's death certificate. I would be interested in finding out where I can find a bit more about my ancestor and where his wives were born. I have tried to put some of the information together but haven't been successful in finding the exact birth/marriage records.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all you're support over the last few day's. Just a quick note to let you know how my ancestry research is going.

At present, the results of my payment to Armagh Ancestry to research my Dad's family has been interesting. In some cases it has provided information that could shed light on the problem of obtaining a birth certificate. Long story.....Don't worry, It's family hahahah.

I've possibly, found a few family member's on Ancestry.co.uk that could help me answer some of the question's about who my mum and dad's family were......I'm hoping that according to recent research; within 100 degree.... I could posisbly be related to my hero Oliver Reed. If that was the case, I would die a happy man : )   hahah

However, the downside of the results that it it turned up with no familial record matches. The research now continues for their birth certicates, don't worry though; i'm on the hunt hahaha....
