Hello, I am from the Netherlands and planning a trip to Ireland with my friend. We made a list of places we want to see. We are so looking forward and want to see a lot :) Is the train a reliable source of transportation in Ireland? What do you think of our planned schedule? I think it will be a busy schedule, but I think it is possible.

We will fly to Belfast and stay in that area for three days. The third day we plan to go to Dublin by train. We saw it's a 2.15 hour trip with a direct train
First day in Dublin, exploring Dublin
Second day: a Wicklow Mountain day tour.
Third day: Dublin
Fourth day: We plan to take the train to Killarney (Kerry) Irish Railways , Dublin Heuston - via Mallow -Killarney. (3.5 hours). We will stay in a hotel in the center of Killarney.

First day there: Exploring the neighborhood.
Second day: A Dingle Dolphin Tour
Third day: Tour Ring of Kerry
Fourth day: Maybe visiting Cobh/ Cork
Fifth day: Take a train from Killarney to Galway (+- 6 hours)

We arranged a stay near the trainstation in Galway.
First day there is the arriving day, after a long train travel.
Next day Cliffs of Moher & the Burren tour.
Third day: Galway
Fourth day: Connemara, Cong, Kylemore Abbey tour.
Fifth day: Clifden or a more relaxing day in Galway
Sixth day: Galway, and later that day with the train from Galway to Dublin (2.5 a 3 hours)

We will have the last 2,5 days in Dublin, before flying home.

Would like to hear from you!

Hi Samantha,

So cool that you're coming over. This planning phase must be super exciting!

Travelling by train in Ireland is a relaxing and hassle-free way of getting around between the several popular destinations. Rail travel lets you see the real Ireland in comfort, and with a great choice of fares and tickets, it's easy to get on the right track and is definitely a reliable source of transportation.

I'm happy to see you already found your way to the National Journey Planner. Did you know you can also download the app so you can stay up-to-date during your travels? The National Journey Planner app provides journey planning and timetable information from all licensed public transport providers across Ireland. The app provides information on train, bus, tram, ferry and taxi services. The Journey Planner app provides door-to-door route plans integrating scheduled departures near your current location to any specific destination point. Users can download the app from the App store, Windows store or Google Play store.

Your schedule looks great! Looks like you are going to have a great time exploring the true beauty of our green island. Make sure to check out the Leap Card when you're traveling in Dublin. The Leap Visitor Card is a prepaid pass that allows you to travel on all Dublin Bus, Airlink 747 buses as well as the Luas and DART for a whole 72 hours (3 days) from its first use. Simply use your card to Touch On Leap Card Validators before or as you board the bus/train/tram and Touch Off when you alight or leave the station and the journey is registered on your Leap Card. It's that easy! You can get a 1-week up to 4-week card, meaning you can hop on to the Luas, DART, Iarnród Éireann’s short-hop zone and Dublin bus at your convenience. The Leap Card isn’t just good for getting around the city: you can use it to explore Dublin far and wide, including coastal villages, suburban towns and everything in between.

Hope this answers your questions. Other members may also give you some great recommendation.
Do you know what will you be visiting in each city?

Groetjes,
Annelies  ☘️

Hello Samantha,

When are you planning on coming to Ireland?

I think you and your friend will really enjoy it here, it's really beautiful any time of the year and there is always tons to do.

While in Dublin, there is so much you can see, I would suggest:
The Wicklow Mountains trip will be brilliant, I think you will both really enjoy it. Bring some comfy shoes and you might be able to go for a little hike and see the beautiful Glendalough Lake.

While you are in Clifden I would highly recommend you take a wander through the Sky Road Route, it's so scenic and full of surprises!

I would suggest renting a car to ensure you see everything and aren't under any time restraints when visiting all these wonderful spots!

We really hope you and your friend enjoy your trip to Ireland. Look forward to hearing how you got on.

Best Wishes,

The Team at Car Rental Ireland.
