Good day.
We are traveling from South Africa to Ireland from the 18th of December to the 4th of January.
I would like to know whether we are allowed to bring biltong (it is dried, salted meat) into the country. It is only for our own consumption and will be vacuum packed.
And lastly, what is the legal amount of alcohol that I am allowed to take into Ireland?
Thank you.

Hello Marinel,

It's not long until you will be with us celebrating the Christmas and New Year, how exciting!

We have a wonderful article on your website on Travel Infomation regarding Customs and Borders. It contains some useful links and general information on travelling to Ireland and what you allowed to bring into the country as your Duty-Free allowance from outside of the EU.

Bringing meat or meat products into Ireland from a non-EU country is generally not allowed.  Irish Biltong is available in supermarkets here in Ireland, maybe you could try some of our homemade Irish Biltong during your visit and let us know how it compares!

The Citizens Information website has some wonderful information on Customs regulations for travelers to Ireland, which may provide you with some additional information you may also be interested in.

Will this be your first time visiting the Emerald Isle?

Speak soon,

Martin

Hi Marinel,

That's very exciting - there's plenty to see and do!

Where are you hoping to explore whilst you are here?  There's not long to go until you are here in Ireland with us, but you may like to have a browse at some of the great trip ideas that we have on our site - especially if you're travelling freely and going with the flow, it could be nice to stop by some of the areas mentioned.

In regards to the weather, it is indeed quite chilly at the moment, so it is definitely recommended to bring some winter woollies to keep warm.  The video below has some helpful advice in regards to what to pack.

I would love to find out where you are hoping to stop by whilst here, and what you are looking forward to most.

Speak soon,

Colin
