Hi Agnes,

Tracing family history can be a little bit tricky the further back you go!

Our friends at Irish Family History mentioned that you have your Great grandad ×3 death certificate which is a wonderful help as a paper trail is extremely useful.

Before 1864 records were kept in the form of church and parish records; while some of these have regrettably been lost over the years, all the surviving records have been sorted into county-based genealogical centres

We have a wonderful resource post by Brian Mitchell, A 3-step guide, that you may find useful. There is a lot of information and useful links within the post.

As you mentioned to our friends at Irish Family History already that he died in Scotland, what other information have you found out about his leaving from Ireland?

Hopefully, our other members will be able to offer some assistance,

Speak soon

Nothing much from before them coming to Scotland Hugh friel and his wife Annie lived in Antrim then moved to Portrush then to Scotland. I am dubious about registering for research sites until I'm sure they have info that is right . I've spent quite a lot on BMD Scotland and have quite a lot of certificates but the pull to go further is strong 😁
The Muldoon side is proving difficult as well as I have no hints as to when they moved from Ireland . I am grateful for your help and any ideas .

Many thanks Agnes

Hi Agnes,

As your Friel family is from Northern Ireland then the General register of Northern Ireland (GRONI) may be a great place to start!

With your Muldoon side, without a hint as to where they are from on the island of Ireland, this will indeed prove a little more difficult.

Please let us know how your search continues,

Martin

Hi Agnes

I took a quick look at the indexes to RootsIreland.ie and it records 13 birth entries of children to parents Hugh Friel and Ann, 9 in County Derry and 4 in County Donegal.

In particular, the County Derry database at http://derry.rootsireland.ie records 6 births of children to parents Hugh Friel and Annie Kears/Keers in Portstewart, County Derry; James in 1864, Margaret 1866, Hugh 1867, John 1869, Charles 1871 and William 1873.

The seaside resort of Portstewart which is situated in County Derry is just 3 miles distant from Portrush which is located in County Antrim!
