When to visit Donegal

Hi,

When is a good time to visit Donegal? Does it get really busy in the school holidays? I was thinking of late September but I'm wondering if we'll have missed the best of the weather by then. Or is it best to leave it until next Spring?

It's great that you're thinking of visiting County Donegal this September! Like many places, some parts of Donegal will be busier during the holiday period. Don't worry though, you will be able to enjoy the rugged wilderness even during peak season, as there is more than enough to explore. :)

What would you like to see and do while you're here? Donegal is the most northern county along the Wild Atlantic Way, and you can follow the road all the way up to (my personal favourite spot) Malin Head. You'll find loads of walking and hiking trails, both along the coast and more inland. If you have the time, make sure not to miss out on Glenveagh National Park. It's really peaceful and absolutely gorgeous. 

If you're planning on spending most of your time outdoors, September is a great time of year to visit Donegal. The weather is usually nice and mild, and on average it's warmer than in August. The temperatures averages between 12 and 18 degrees, with some chance of rain.

That's very helpful, thanks. We're very keen on nature and wildlife so we'll be doing plenty of walking and we'll be sure to visit Glenveagh.  We are also hoping to go whale and dolphin spotting on a boat trip. 

I am interested in ancient monuments and stone circles and I believe there are some of those to see too, and anything else historic.

Glenveagh is a super place to visit with lots of trails that lead out into the countryside!

Not far away is Glencolmcille, a place of tombs and sites of dwellings from the Megalithic period.

There are indeed plenty of ancient sites all over the Inishowen peninsula too. Grianán of Aileach, Carndonagh Cross and Mass rock and many more standing stones and crosses.

As part of the Wild Atlantic Way, there will be plenty of places to see and things to do as you drive along, the countryside and coastline are amongst the best you will find on the island of Ireland.

A quick internet search for Historical Donegal finds a whole load of interesting places to visit. You certainly will be kept busy during your time with us!
