I am planning a trip to Ireland with my 2 children and would like to hire a car, but I don't own a credit card. What can I do? We will be travelling form Dublin to Galway and southe from there. Allthough, that was the plan...
Anyone has some advice?
Thanks, Carlien

Hi Carlien,
Hope you are keeping well. My name is Noeleen Furlong & I work with Hertz Rent A Car here in Ireland.
We do ask that a renter provides a Credit card for payment at time of pick - however we can also accept a debit card here in Ireland.  Not sure if you are familiar with hiring a vehicle - but rates normally include basic insurance - Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft Protection (TP) - subject to a damage excess which ranges from EUR 1,600 to EUR 3,000. When you pick up your vehicle a pre-auth is taking on your card for the damage excess amount - which can lead to problems if you are using your Debit Card for payment - as it will put a hold on your funds.  If you take out the additional Super Cover, this reduces the excess liability to Zero & you can then eliminate the need for this pre-auth on your card. If you would like me to help out with your car hire arrangements - just send me an email ( nfurlong@hertz.ie ) and I can arrange and answer any questions that you might have.
Thanks
Noeleen

Dag Carlien,

Wat leuk dat je naar Ierland komt. :)

We have a page with general information on hiring a car, and we have a list of industry partners that will be happy to help you decide the best option for you. Several companies like Hertz, Dooley Car Rentals, Enterprise, to name a few will give you the option of using your debit card to hire a car. There will be some added conditions in their general terms and conditions, but it there is a range of companies that provide this service.

Some companies will allow you to hire a car without either a credit card or a debit card, but in that case you will most likely have to pay the entire hire sum plus any deposits in advance. Many also have an option of prepaying when you book, which may give you some better deals as well, it's worth it to shop around a bit.

I would advise you to check with the various companies, as they will be able to provide you the most up to date information on their terms and conditions.

Do you have a plan yet on where you would like to go with the children? There are many things to do in Ireland that are very enjoyable for children of all ages and we're always happy to help with inspiration.

Een hele fijne dag gewenst,
Cornelia

Save yourself the leg work and speak to https://indigocarhire.co.uk/debit-card-car-hire/ , we specialise in dealing with these requests and have access to all suppliers worldwide who will genuinely accept payment with a debit card.

You do not always have to buy top up insurance or pay to reduce your excess, there are other options.

After reading this about Hertz, I paid for a car online with a Debit Card. And assumed I'll pay for a super cover at the location with my Debit Card. Was very disappointed when I came to location and was told that I still need a Credit Card to get the car. So I am confused - do you need a Credit Card or not?

Hi Edvinas,

I'm so sorry to hear there were some unexpected surprises when you rented your car here. Have you been in touch with Hertz before or after you travelled?

The credit card is necessary for the insurance part of renting your car. As Noeleen from Hertz mentioned above, 'We do ask that a renter provides a Credit card for payment at time of pick - however we can also accept a debit card here in Ireland. ' and 'When you pick up your vehicle a pre-auth is taking on your card for the damage excess amount - which can lead to problems if you are using your Debit Card for payment - as it will put a hold on your funds. If you take out the additional Super Cover, this reduces the excess liability to Zero & you can then eliminate the need for this pre-auth on your card.'

I recommend reaching out to Hertz as they will be able to explain everything, and if you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I am more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Warm regards,

Melin
