I have never been to Ireland and I wasn't sure if my US driver's license was enough to show proof of my age or if I had to take my passport with me. I am worried that if I need to take my passport with me everywhere, I could lose it.

It's best to keep your passport in a safe place while you're exploring the island, James. :) A valid driving license will be accepted as proof of identity in most places, but when renting a car or checking into your hotel, they might ask for your passport as well. You won't be asked for your ID very often, but it might happen when you want to enter a pub or nightclub. Is this what you were wondering about?
