We are travelling in September with an oldtimer (1930, Wolseley)  through Ireland.
First stop is Five Corners (close to Larne). From there, we like to drive to Dublin in two days.
No motorways, no big city (Belfast).
Can anyone give us some tips for a nice scenic route?

Ha Tineke,

Wat een schitterende auto om een reis door Ierland mee te maken!

Travelling from Larne to Dublin while avoiding motorways is a great way of exploring the countryside. There are some great routes to be had that will take you along Lough Neagh for instance, which is a great place to stop off and explore the area. You can find the Ardboe Old Cross, or take your time exploring the Western Forts.

While you're in the area, you can explore Carrickmore, where you can find wide range of historic monuments, such as cairns, stone circles, standing stones and raths.

You can wander down to Lough Oughter, and visit Clough Oughter Castle, or drive along the roads connecting Kallishandra, Carrigallen and Aughnacliffe and take in the views and natural wonder of the area.

If you would like to spend the night, our accommodation search engine has a map view that will show you where exactly in the area you can stay over, so you can pick your favourite spot in the area.

What kind of things do you like to see and do while you're out travelling? Are there any specific limitations as to what type of roads your Wolseley can take, limits to inclination for instance?

I'm sure some of our partners will chime in soon with their own tips for what you can do and see along the way and what route is the loveliest to take, and I know we would all love to see a photograph of your car!

Hele fijne reis gewenst,
Cornelia

Thanx Cornelia,

There is just a limitation for the amount of luggage .....
We don't want to do more than 200 km a day and don't like the motorways. Therefore we don't want to extend the route more than necessary. In two days we like to reach Dublin. We are staying there for 2 nights to be able to visit the city. After that we are heading for Gort. There we also stay 2 nights so we have a day to see the Burden. Thereafter we are going to the area of Killarney. There or maybe a bit closer to the coast we like to stay 4 or 5 nights to visit the peninsulas, drive the Ring of Kerry etc.  Depending on the weather we are driving back via Cork to Roslare. Driving an open car like this is the biggest part of the fun, but we also like to visit some nice towns and do some walking. Here a picture of the car, taken in Holland and in France. Hope to be able to make some nice ones in Ireland as well.

Dag Tineke,

That's a very nice ride! I'm sure that while you'll be looking at all the natural attractions, you will be an attraction by yourself for all the locals to admire. :)

Cornelia has given you some great tips for a scenic drive. I'd like to offer some more ideas - recently Caterina from Australia had a similar question and I recommended her to take the route along Strangford Lough and the Mournes to get from Belfast to Dublin. It's a lovely and attractive drive, keeping you well under your limit of 200 km a day.

The Burren, Killarney National Park and the Southern Peninsulas are wonderful places to explore as well, be it by car or on foot.

Have you decided on a route to get from Dublin to Gort yet?

Vriendelijke groeten,
Joris

Thanks Joris,
That seems to be a lovely route. Hope we can find an easy way to pass Belfast :-)

Hi, Tineke!

How was your road trip in September? How many places and scenic routes did you get to see?

Looking forward to hearing about it!
