The Walled City of Derry~Londonderry is full of culture and history – it’s also the gateway to the Causeway Coastal Route and the Wild Atlantic Way, so it’s definitely a place you don’t want to miss on your travels around Ireland! Better yet, you can explore it all on a budget with these places to visit that will keep you and your wallet happy.

Get right down to the foundations of the city’s culture and history with a stop by the famous City Walls. Built during the 17th century, today you can walk the length of these remarkable defences and take in the panoramic views of Derry-Londonderry. Along your stroll, notice the fascinating collection of cannons dotted along the 1.5km route – the Roaring Meg is a particular favourite! Best of all, it’s free!

Can’t get enough of the views? Then head to the Tower Museum. Explore the fascinating exhibitions on the history of the city and the famous shipwreck La Trinidad Valencera, which capsized off the coast of Ireland in 1588. Don’t miss the panoramic vistas of the River Foyle and the surrounding city from the top of the museum, too.

Looking for a cheap way to get around? Try walking! Derry~Londonderry is easy to get about on foot, and it’s a great way to discover city hubs and hotspots. If walking isn’t your style, get a multi-journey card from Foyle Metro services, an inexpensive way to hop around on public transport.

One of Derry~Londonderry’s most popular places to eat is also one of its least expensive, so head to Pyke ‘N’ Pommes for some great street food from their quirky converted shipping container beside the River Foyle. Fiorentini’s, a family-run business since 1912, is a one-stop shop for cheap and cheerful food, serving everything from toasties and fish and chips to delicious ice cream.

And when you’re ready to rest your weary bones check out Hostel Connect – accommodation with some bang for your buck, or try the Travelodge, the ideal place to centre yourself within all the action of the city.
