Hi,

I'm involved in a UK-Based 18 piece 'Big Band' which is considering Ireland for our 2019 tour and are looking for a few pointers...
Where/when are we best travelling to find a 'scene' for this kind of music? We were considering the Sligo/ Galway area heading across to Dublin, but any hints or tips are greatly appreciated.
We do have quite a broad repertoire, but can struggle to find venues, because we do require quite a bit of stage space...

Here's our YouTube channel for an idea what we're about-

Many Thanks,

Matt

There is quite a vibrant Jazz/Swing Scene in Galway, the Black Magic Big Band are playing every Monday night and on Sundays there is the Galway Jazz Band in Busker Brown's. You could perhaps contact any of them to get more information. Wishing you every success with setting up a tour of Ireland, and who knows may manage to catch one of your performances.

Hi Matt,

Great to see you've found your way to our community!

The tip from Green Marble Cycle Tours is a good one and we also recommend to reach out to our venues and organisers directly, as they will be able to suggest the right time and locations for your tour around Ireland.

And if you have some time for sightseeing and exploring while you're touring, we can help with some tips and suggestions for your visit as well. :)

Warm regards,
Cornelia

Hi Matt,

Good to see you've found your way over here! I think the Jazz Ireland page might come in handy, as they provide information for musicians as well. You can reach out to them directly via the contact form.

Best of luck on your search! :)

Hi Matt

Thanks for your post, it's good to hear that you're considering Ireland as part of your 2019 tour. I would highly recommend the City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival for 2019. This is one of the most popular annual events in our city as the 2018 festival featured artists from all over the world and welcomed more than 60,000 revellers over the bank holiday weekend. The 2019 City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival will take place from 2nd – 6th May and further details on this amazing event can found here.

The event is organised by the local Derry City and Strabane District Council. I would recommend contacting the council if you show further interest in the festival. The contact details for the council are as follows:

Derry City and Strabane District Council
98 Strand Road
Derry
BT48 7NN
Tel: (028) 7125 3253
Email: jazz@derrystrabane.com

Furthermore, if you require assistance in relation to this event or the Walled City of Derry-Londonderry, then please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

Kind Regards

Barry

Hi Matt,

Great to hear your band is hoping to come and entertain the Swing and Jazz fans in Ireland next year!

If you would consider travelling north from Sligo and happened to be touring during the month of June, you could link into The Danny Boy Jazz & Blues Festival. It takes place in Limavady from the 12th to 16th June 2019.  The popular event is in its 23rd year and attracts a great variety of musicians and music lovers. The ticketed events during the festival usually take place in the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre which has a sufficiently spacious stage for all 18 of the "Big Band". If you are travelling outside of those dates there plenty of theatres and auditoriums in the Causeway Coast and Glens region that could accommodate you.

I wish you all the best with your 2019 tour!

Anne
