Hi there,

My husband and I are planning a trip to Ireland in September. We are not planning to rent a car, but have an interest in doing some day hikes during our trip.
We will likely stay in Dublin, Cork, Killarney, and Galway. Are there tour operators and/ or easy public transit to see the national park in Killarney or the Wicklow mountains?  I would like to select our locations/ cities to stay based on how easily we might access day tours and/or public transit for hiking.

Would appreciate any insight or tips on this topic.

Hi Tina,

Walking and Hiking is a very popular activity here on the island of Ireland!

September is a wonderful time to visit, a little quieter than the main seasons but still warm and the days are still long enough to enjoy all there is to see and do.

Public transport between the major towns and cities will be a perfect way to visit the different locations of Dublin, Cork, Killarney, and Galway. There is a super article on 10 Day trips from Dublin, many use public transport to get the different places such as Glendalough, Blessington Lakes, Howth, and Powerscourt House and Gardens to name but a few.

Cork, Killarney, and Galway all have walking routes near the centres. Irish trails have a super website where you can find both linear and circular walks to keep you busy.

There are tour operators who can offer day trips and self-guided walking holidays which allow for linear walks and onward accommodation so you can move along without the worries of luggage and getting back to where you started. Wonderful Ireland Walking  Holidays would be one such operator if you fancied this as an option.

We also have other community posts regarding walking holidays. Please feel free to have a look and see if there is some useful information there too.

I hope this gives you lots of inspiration, and I'm sure your fellow members and some industry partners will be able to add to this list!

If you need any more help, just let me know!

Martin

Hi Tina,

How are you? Welcome to the community! Delighted to hear you are planning a trip to Ireland. Hiking is definitely the best way to see the hidden gems of Ireland that you may not get to see from just visiting the touristy places. I see you have specifically asked about day tours but if you are open to suggestions I will leave some information about our tours.

Have you considered doing a small group tour for your trip? Here at Vagabond we specialise in fantastic off-the-beaten track adventure tours of Ireland. We will take you to the hidden corners of the country. In our adventure tours you will be hiking, horse riding, cycling and kayaking to experience great Irish scenery, friendly locals, music and pub life. Our tours visit all over Ireland depending on where you want to visit. We collect from Dublin but we do not do tours of Dublin, however we do visit all of your other requested destinations on tour.

If you wish to have a further look I will leave a link to our website. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

We hope you have an amazing trip to Ireland!

Kind regards,
