I've  been  trying  to  find  information  on  my  third  great grandfather, John Ronan.  He came to America  by 1850 and married Bridget  Bowen.  Don't  know how to find him  in Ireland.

Hi Laurie,

It's great that you found your way to our community!

Your John was born before 1864, which means that the records were kept in the form of church and parish records. Many of these have regrettably been lost over the years. All the surviving records from that period have been sorted into county based genealogical centres. (Later records are kept in the General Record Office of Ireland.)

For your John I would suggest first the passenger lists of arriving vessels. Although not perfect, they often provide information. Is there any family history, family lore or nugget of information you have for John? Perhaps a place or county in Ireland where he might have originated, or a port, either leaving Ireland or arriving in the USA? There were no official lists kept before 1890, but a great many lists have survived.

Warm regards,
Cornelia

Hi Laurie

If you hold no clues from either family or record sources at your end to county/parish of origin of your John Ronan in Ireland the best you can do is search the 'big' Irish family history websites for potential 'matches'. These websites are detailed in this guide.

For example, RootsIreland, at http://www.rootsireland.ie, records the baptismal entries in 1827 of a John Ronan in both Counties Westmeath and Wexford and of a John Ronane in County Kilkenny.

Laurie

You do not say in your query where your family member was born.  We have a genealogist here in Armagh who no doubt if he cannot help you himself, will be able to point you in the right direction to get the information you need.

Please email research@armaghbanbridgecraigavon.gov.uk and Feargal will respond to you within 3-5 working days.

Good luck with your research!

Hi Laurie,

I’m a descendant of Alicia Ronan and Michael Scollins.... I don’t know much about John Ronan but I can tell you about Alicia’s children.

Hi Laurie

RootsIreland website at http://www.rootsireland.ie records the birth details of 3 John Ronan/Ronane in 1827 alone: in Counties Kilkenny, Wexford and Westmeath.
