Hello
My name is Cella, short for Marcella and my name comes from the Irish side of my mothers family.  It seems to have been a tradition that every second generation a female child would be given my name.  It will die out with me as neither my brother nor myself have children and our cousins have not kept up with the naming.
My great great grandfather, Walter Murtagh was born around 1798 and was baptised on the 5th November of that year in the Parish of Oldcastle Catholic Church.  His father Patrick and mother Rose Brady were married in the same church on the 14 of May 1794,
I believe that Patrick's death was registered in St James Church, Parish of Athboy County Meath on the 19 January 1816.  I do not know his date of birth.
Rose Brady I believe was baptised on the 2 August 1767 at St Pauls, Arran Quay Co Dublin.  I think she died on the 27th of September in 1841 in Shankhill, Armagh.
I find it very hard to find additional information as the microfiche records seems to blot out quite a bit of information.  I don't know who or how many siblings he may have had.
I will be in Oldcastle in early May for only a couple of days and am wondering if you could tell me if there is a church that would have been there at that time as I would like to visit to pay respect to my forebears.  Any help would be much appreciated.
Respectfully
Cella

Hello Cella,

It's great to hear about your Irish roots, and so exciting you'll be here so soon! :)

A lot of important life experiences of your ancestors happened in this church, and it would be wonderful if you got the chance to visit. Do you have a digital copy of the microfiche image? If you post it in this thread, hopefully one of the experts will be able to take a look.

St. Brigid's Church in Oldchurch, County Meath, replaced an earlier church on this location which was built in 1815. There also is the St. James' Church in Athboy Parish, County Meath.

In addition, have you been in touch with the Meath Heritage Centre yet? Before 1864 records were kept in the form of church and parish records, and all the surviving records have been sorted into county based genealogical centres.

I hope this was helpful, and that some of our other members will be able to help you find out more about your Meath roots. :) Feel free to reach out at any time if you have any other questions!

Warm regards,

Melin

Hello and again thank you, Melin, for your contributions to my questions.

I will certainly visit both these churches and definitely contact the Meath Heritage Centre.
I hope that the attached image comes out.  It is the record of Walters birth register.
Hope you are having a great day/night
Cella

Hi Cella,

Thanks so much for sharing the digital copy! Hopefully some of the experts will be able to uncover something there.

Keep us posted on your findings, and of course your time here on the Emerald Isle! What else do you have planned for your visit? :)

Warm regards,

Melin
