Hello Irishmen,
I wonder if the expression "The Irish Rose" can mean a shamrock?
Or has that never been the meaning of the word?
Irish rose, is that to be seen in churches, stone carving or somewhere else?
Regards from Bornholm
Jan

Hello Jan,

The Irish Rose has lots of different interpretations, but not in reference to the Shamrock!

There have been plenty of poems and songs written referring to roses and we also have the Rose of Tralee competition every year too. Stone and woodcarvers use roses, some even say it's to cover up mistakes when carving but I will leave that up to you to judge that one.

Hopefully, your fellow members and some industry partners will be able to add to this and give their insights to its origins.

Speak soon,

Martin

Thank you, Martin.
My question is because somebody said he met someone, who called the motive on this stone an Irish rose; see link.
It looks more like a propeller to me - or maybe a beginning of a cross that went wrong.

Hi Jan,

Where did you come across that symbol?
Knowing the location may help us uncover the mystery behind the symbol.

And it is not Danish, rune experts here have never heard "irish rose".

I wonder if this could have something to do with the motive?

Interesting!

I also found a similar drawing in a Megalithic Tomb in Cairn.

Here is the Facebook page of the center with a picture of the stone there.
You can see a couple of similar drawings; maybe they have more information regarding the signification.

Thank you, very interesting. If you see more examples I would like to see them.
The reference I made, came because a lady have said, that she saw it in a church, so I have search for "rose windows" in cathedrals, and also found something interesting - will make a link later !

At the end of the 19th century, many Danish churches were restored and changed, and some were demolished to make way for a new one which, in the architect's opinion, was a better version of a medieval church, or just because the old one was collapsing. In Østermarie on Bornholm, it was discovered that the church contained details that are unknown from other churches in Denmark, and the experts have called it Irish building custom.
We don't know any details, but it is known, that monks from Ireland travelled, så maybe some of them were here.
The missionary munk Ansgar was in Scandinavia, presumably many years before churches were built here.

Jan this is so interesting and intriguing!

Could you share with us pictures of the church?
It would be amazing to uncover some Irish connections.
