Solo trekking: If you want to get a real sense of Ireland’s unmatched sights and sounds, the seaside village of
Howth is an absolute must. Grab a bite and drink at the village food market, and then hike your way up Howth Head complete with vintage radio museum and the medieval ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey.
The people: Even if it is a solo journey, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the hospitality of the Irish people. Irish
pubs are famous the world over for their warm and lively atmosphere. You can immerse yourself in a lively trad session in the Celt in Dublin; or, if you’re feeling brave, you could sip a pint in the most haunted pub in Ireland, Grace Neill’s in County Down; or snuggle up to the roaring fire in Sean’s Bar in County Westmeath.
Causeway Coastal Route: You could plot a course along northern route that stretches from Belfast to Derry~Londonderry, taking in gorgeous sites like the
Gobbins, charming villages like Ballycastle, and imposing, historically resonant castles like
Dunluce. One user rented a car and spent the week exploring the island, with their own personal favourite being the wild and vivid views on the Antrim coast.
The Aran Islands: One user mentioned “biking around Inishmore, and stopping at a little restaurant to eat some delicious Irish stew”. As well as inviting pubs and restaurants, “the Islands of Saints and Scholars”, the Aran Islands, offer an insight into Ireland’s traditional culture. All three of the islands are brimming with unique experiences that any solo traveller would love. One highlight is Dun Aonghasa, located on a dramatic 300 foott cliff edge.
Donegal: Another user loved the “beauty, wildness, the unique pubs and the warm people” of
Donegal. And this untamed beauty is particularly evident at the
Slieve League cliffs, where, on a clear day, its gorgeous panoramic views take in Sligo, Leitrim and the Mayo coast.
