Hey everyone,

My girlfriend and I are planning to finally revisit Ireland this August. We fell in love with the country in 2019 and wanted to come back as soon as possible. Now, we are finally vaccinated and Ireland just opened its borders for other EU countries, so we are ready to go.

We just have one more question: What about the Passenger Locator Form when you are camping in Ireland? We are planning to travel around Ireland and sleep at different campsites every day. I have not yet attempted to fill out the PLF, but they usually require you to list a temporary address in the country you're travelling to so they can... locate you. I assume it's the same for Ireland's Passenger Locator Form?

Any help (or links that might help) are greatly appreciated!

Hey Fabian,

It's lovely to hear that you have been over with us before in 2019 and are coming back in August!

Things are evolving periodically regarding travel both to and from the island of Ireland as well as on the island of Ireland. While it is difficult to say exactly when any new changes will occur to the travel restrictions and public health guidance, we would recommend checking our website traveller health page for information on the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. There are different pages for different countries, where will you be coming from?

The online Passenger Locator Form (PLF) currently allows for one address only and separate ones must be filled out for each person too. As you travel around you will need to update this information by email to the email address given on the government page.

Have you an itinerary planned already? There is a handy accommodation search page on our website that may be of help too. Scroll down to the where do you want to stay section and use the filters to find places to stay.

Hey Martin,

Thank you very much for your detailed reply.

Yes, as everywhere, restrictions and guidelines are changing on a regular basis. That is why we checked the official page for COVID regulations in Ireland almost daily this summer. We will be coming from Austria, if we figure out how to fill out the PLF. :)

The PLF only allows for one address which can be updated, yes. The problem is, that we want to change campsite daily and - wherever legally possible - wild camp. We have already done our research regarding wild camping in Ireland and found some spots where it is legal. For all other stops, we plan to either ask the landowner's permission or sleep at a regular campsite. We would choose our campsites by stopping by and checking how many people are currently camping there, because we want to avoid other people as much as possible to minimise the risk of a COVID-19 infections.

Our planned route would be driving along the Wild Atlantic Way. From north to south, along the west coast.

Thank you,
Fabian

Hey Fabian,

As you are moving around frequently, be sure to keep your PLF updated daily by email once you reach your locations, so any potential spreading safety measures can be implemented.

When wild camping on people's property be sure to follow the seven leave no trace principles:
  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Minimize campfire impacts (be careful with fire)
  • Respect wildlife
  • Be considerate of other visitors
You can use this useful article to find out more information on camping in Ireland.

Best,

Sean

Hey Sean,

Thanks for all the help!

Yes, I can update the PLF daily but I'm not sure how to update it if we are not staying at an official campsite. If we find some great wild camping spots, there are no addresses we can update the PLF with.

Best,
F

Hi Fabian,

It's indeed a bit tricky to update your address on the PLF when wild camping.

I'd suggest putting the address (or the street name) of the locations where you'll be staying. You could also use GPS coordinates.

Hope this helps,
Antoine
