Starting off, less than an hour drive from the city,
Bru na Boinne, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see on your trip to Ireland. Bru na Boinne consists of a complex of ancient tombs including Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. Pass through the visitor centre with fascinating exhibits detailing the pre-Celtic history of Ireland. Or, join a tour with experts to guide you around this 6,000 year old site. This is an ideal day trip for history buffs especially!
Fancy getting out into the wild?
Wicklow Mountains National Park is less than an hour drive from Dublin city. Wander along one of the many walking routes passing through lush woodlands and gorgeous lakes. For incredible views, drive past the
Sally Gap and by
Glenmacnass waterfall or journey up to the viewing platform at the top of the
Wicklow Gap and drink in a panoramic view of the park and mountain range.
Next up,
Glendalough is nestled in the heart of Wicklow Mountains National Park. This early Christian complex is one of the most extensive monastic sites in Ireland. The remains include a 30m tall 10th century round tower as well as the 12th century Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul along with several smaller churches and a graveyard. With plenty of scenic walking routes into these lush surroundings, what are you waiting for? Get your boots on and don’t forget your camera!
Hop on the DART train to journey to
Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow and explore one of Ireland’s most stunning gardens. This 18th-century estate is full of history! Wander around this historic house and even shop some locally designed gifts and clothing. Then meander out through the estate’s lush gardens with views over the Sugar Loaf Mountain. Or even take a picnic down to
Powerscourt Waterfall, around 6km from the main estate, this is absolutely worth a visit!
Or, if you fancy a coastal escape, explore the old seaside town of Bray in County Wicklow. Take a stunning scenic walk along the cliff tops at
Bray Head. At the seafront’s southern edge, a signposted path runs for 7km along the clifftops towards Greystones. Be sure to pack a towel as
Greystones is a popular spot for Dubliners to take a dip, no matter the weather!
