A question some of us have is: We would like to go to the Aran Isles but aren't interested in a 8-10 hour tour. Can we just go directly to the ferry on our own? Do we need to purchase tickets ahead of time? Thank you

You can indeed purchase tickets to the Aran Islands without booking a tour. Ferries depart from Rossaveel (around 23 miles of Galway) and you can take a shuttle bus if you don't have transportation from Galway. You can find the timetables for the ferry here.
