Hi there, I am currently confused about the requirements for traveling in Europe with an expired EU ID card. Normally, we are still allowed to travel up to 5 years of expiration, but I can't find the confirmation for Ireland.
Since Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, can we travel to Ireland with an expired EU ID card, or is it mandatory to travel with a valid card?
Thanks,
Adrian

Hi Adrian,

It's a good question. 😊

It's usually not recommended to use an expired ID as a travel document because some border agents are not always aware that validity of ID cards can be extended. Therefore, it's better to use a passport or to apply for a renewal of your idendity card.

However, it's also possible to bring the explanatory note to avoid any issues, such as this one for France, and show it to the authorities or your airline with your current ID card.

Are you planning to come to the island of Ireland soon? What would you like to visit?

À bientôt,
Sophie
