Hello, I am wondering if there is a group established for the Jenkinson Family name? I have relatives in Germany also and there is a world group that covers my maiden name there. My relative John Jenkinson was in the area of Tullow, County Carlow, Ireland born about 1795. I realized this is a long shot, but I just wanted to see if I can find anything more about him. Or maybe there is a book published on the Jenkinson's that might help. I appreciate any guidance you can give me. Pam Bares, Fredonia, WIsconsin, USA

Hello Pam,

It is lovely to hear that you are looking for information on your ancestors and have traced a relative John Jenkinson back to County Carlow!

The John Grenham website, a great place to search surnames and locations, has a few mentions of Jenkinson's a bit later in time, they may also be relations.

While having a look at the various websites, I also came across some details about a Jenkinson clan in Carlow and Galway with a John mentioned in 1749, maybe an earlier relation?

Hopefully, some of our members and industry partners can help as well.

What relation was he to you and did he leave the island of Ireland around the same time?

Hello Pam

The tithe applotment books, in effect an early-19th century substitute of rural Ireland, identify 4 Jenkinson farms in County Carlow, namely

William Jenkinson farming 43 acres in townland of Ballydarton, Fennagh Parish in 1826
William Jenkinson faming 44 acres in townland of Ballaghaderneen, Fennagh Parish in 1826
John Jenkinson farming 16 acres in townland of Coolroe, Moyacomb Parish in 1837
Anne Jenkinson farming 22 acres in townland of Coolroe, Moyacomb Parish in 1837

These entries can be searched and viewed online on National Archives of Ireland website at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=jenkinson&firstname=&county=Carlow&parish=&townland=&search=Search  .

With best wishes

Brian

Martin -- thank you for answering me. My relative "John" did not leave Ireland as far as I know. Edward Jenkinson was the relative that immigrated to America. Here is how he is related:
John Jenkinson: born approximately 1795
Edward Jenkinson (his son) born 1822 and died 1883 in Tullow, Cty Carlow married to Eleanor Smith
William C Jenkinson (Ed's son) born 1862 in Cty Carlow, died 1936 Milwaukee. WI, USA married to Elizabeth Burroughs
Gladys Catharine Jenkinson Ritter (Wm's daughter) b 1904 and died 1985 Milwaukee, WI, USA married George Ritter
David Alan Ritter (Gladys' son) b 1936 in Milwaukee, WI, USA and died 2021 West Bend, WI, USA
Pamela Jean Ritter Bares (ME! and David's daughter) born 1957 in Milwaukee, Wi, USA

Once again, thank you for answering me.

Thanks to Brian as always, for jumping in with some helpful information, we hope it helps fill in a gap or two!

The William you have may be the one that has the Tythe books but it may be a relation to Edward as the years suggest they would be a little young for farming! :)

There are quite a few churches in Tullow, County Carlow so information on John may be located in any of these if he stayed and died in this area as records before 1864 would be parish/church records.

Thanks for bringing this information forward to us, it is fascinating how families move about.
