My husband is a Huge Family History Buff. I would love to surprise him with the opportunity to meet relatives while we are visiting Ireland in January.

I inadvertently booked one of our stays in the town from where his ancestors originate. Our last name is Dwyer, and the town is Thurles in county Tipperary. I know his Great Grandfather Garrett Earnest Dwyer was born 185, Drombane, Tipperary. Immigrated the Americas 1873.

He has connected to the Butler, Maher, Redmond, Larcey, Rigney and Quigley Families.

When doing genealogy one can not get access to living family records without their express permission. I really hope someone will see this and be able to point me in the right direction to find living relatives.

Sincerely,
Dana R. Dwyer.

Hello Dana,

How lovely that you will come and visit the Emerald Isle so soon, in January! It's absolutely wonderful that you are helping your husband with uncovering his Irish roots, and perhaps find living relatives. His ancestral connection with Tipperary will certainly add an extra dimension to your visit - what a lucky coincidence you booked a stay in the hometown of his forebears!

General useful genealogy resources can be found on our website - although we suspect you might already be aware of those since your husband is, as you say, a family history buff.

I would suggest you contact the helpful folks of the North Tipperary Genealogy Centre or the South Tipperary Genealogy Centre. Another possibility could be contacting the local newspaper and put in a classified ad. Here is a lovely story of someone who did just that and had a great response.

As you know, for privacy reasons it is not possible to search for living relatives. However, as you visit the region where his family originates from you can certainly share your story with people you meet, and you just might find relatives that way - it wouldn't be the first time that happened!

I wish you and your husband a grand time on our wee island. Do let me know if you have any more questions about your upcoming holiday. If you make any interesting discoveries, please feel free to share with us here! We love hearing stories about old and new family connections made.

Kind regards,

Vera
