I'm on a mission to find any possible distant relations on my mother's side of the family. My maternal grandparents were Glaswegians BUT, my nan's maiden name was Cleary.
My ma thinks her family moved over to Scotland to find work but that's all I know.
Any Cleary's out there?

Hi Susie!

It's great to see you researching your Irish roots, and we're glad you found your way to our Community! It can be a challenging journey as you look back in time, but it can also be very rewarding.

You'll find a list of helpful research resources on our website, including links to archives, foundations, and genealogy centers. The Irish Genealogy site also allows you to search the Cleary name directly. Our Community forum also has some other threads that might be useful and worth taking a look at.

For information, before 1864, you'll find that records were kept in the form of church and parish records, and all the surviving ones have been sorted into county-based genealogical centres. In 1864 civil registration was introduced in Ireland, which is when formal registration of births, marriages, adoptions, and deaths appear. These records are now to be found at the General Register Office of Ireland (GRO).

Let us know if there's anything more we can do to assist you, and with some luck, some fellow Clearys might just get in touch!

Alex
