We want to stay in the north, south, east and west for 3 nights each, but don’t want to stay in a large city each time. we will do day trips from each “hotel” probably with a max of two hours in one direction.  Can someone please suggest those 4 or 5 towns/cities that would have easy access to heritage, culture, scenery etc.

Hi Joan!

Sounds like you are gearing up for an unforgettable adventure on the Emerald Isle.

Country Antrim in Northern Ireland is a great area to explore!
Its main draw is Belfast but there is so much more to experience beyond the city.
Ballycastle for example is a wonderful coastal town and a brilliant access point to the Causeway Coast.

For the South/South-West of Ireland, may I suggest a true favourite: Dingle
A visit to the town will also allow you to tour the Dingle Peninsula, which holds 6000 years of history.

In the Eastern part of the island you can't miss Dublin if you are interested in literature and love spending time in a big city that feels like a small town.
If a trip to Dublin is too general, Wexford is a great alternative!
Here you will be an hour away from Waterford City, Ireland's oldest (Viking) city.

County Galway in the West offers the perfect mix of city life and wilderness with Connemara and the Aran Islands for example.

To help find accommodation across the island, we have a handy guide on our homepage: Where To Stay. Here you can select the type of accommodation you are looking for including self-catering stays, castle stays and bed & breakfast stays.

I hope this helps, Joan!
Best wishes,
Megan
