Hi Lorraine,

It's good to hear you are researching your Irish ancestry. When you say Casal Dowra, might you perhaps be referring to the village of Dowra in County Cavan?

Would you happen to know what year, approximately, Michael McHugh was born or married?

In 1864 civil registration was introduced in Ireland, which is when we started seeing the formal registration of births, marriages, adoptions, and deaths. These records have been kept at the General Register Office of Ireland (GRO), through the Irish Genealogy website, to this day.

Before 1864 records were kept in the form of church and parish records, all the surviving records have been sorted into county-based genealogical centres. This page here is useful for people looking to search records from County Cavan, which may be where Michael McHugh was from.

There is an existing community post on 3 steps to tracing Irish ancestors that may be worth a look at. There are some great resources and tips to be found there too.

Regards,
Eoin

Hi Eoin, I’m thinking about 1877. My aunt Rose was born there. They had a cottage in Casal, but don’t know where.

Hi Lorraine,

It might be worth trying the website of the genealogy centre in County Cavan which Eoin shared above, should you refer to the village of Dowra in County Cavan. Could it be that the cottage was located in the town of Cashel in County Tipperary, as we are not aware of a place by the name of 'Casal'? Should this be the case, you could try the genealogy centre in County Tipperary.

In addition, have a look at these results from a search for the name of 'Michael McHugh' on the platform Ancestry.com. Hopefully, these resources can guide you in the right direction.

I hope you'll be able to locate the records you are looking for and wish you every success in your genealogy journey!

Best wishes,
Rebecca ☘️

Hi Lorraine,

I just stumbled accross your post. I suspect the name of the townland is Cashel, not Casel. My own McHughs are also
originally from that townland and a few ancestors are still there.
