Hello
We are visiting Ireland next year and we are staying near Galway. But we would like to make a 1 night stop on the way to Galway. Any recommendations of places to stay. we are looking for a nice Irish Town with plenty of places to eat and perhaps a tourist attraction?
Thanks Osian

hi Rebecca
thanks for replying. we are crossing over from Anglesey, North Wales and travelling to say in Athenry for 4 nights, but looking to stop over for 1 night before going to Athenry the following day, and was wondering if there is anywhere nice to stay along the way?
looking for a nice town where there is enough places to eat and perhaps a nice walk in the evening?
Thanks Osian

Hi Osian, Your plans sound great! You could look into visiting Athlone which is a midlands town on the way to Athenry. Athlone is situated 40 minutes away from Athenry and has plenty of great restaurants. In terms of a nice walk in the evening, you could start at Seans Bar, which is the oldest bar in Europe, and make your way to the riverfront, crossing the bridge of the River Shannon. You can then follow the Riverwalk, passing castles and marinas for the perfect evening stroll after a bite to eat. Let me know if you have any other questions and I would be glad to answer. Cathaoir

Thank you Cathaoir & Rebecca for your suggestions! Osian, you might want to look at this offbeat itinerary between Dublin and Galway for more suggestions, especially since you seem to want to take your time on the way to County Galway. You could also consider Tullamore (which has its famous distillery) or Ballinasloe, which are charming towns with enough things to do at night. If you decide to stay in Athlone, the monastic site of Clonmacnoise isn't far either. Let us know what you end up choosing! Cheers, Antoine

No problem at all, Osian! Always happy to help. 😊
Do you already have plans to explore County Galway (Connemara, Aran Islands perhaps) while staying in Athenry?
Best, Antoine
