My son will have 5 days to travel before landing in Galway for a study abroad program. He's very interested in exploring towns like Roscrea and Athenry - are these places too far flung to visit without a car? Can he get accomodation that has local bus service? Any other suggestions on where he could visit? Thank you so much for your help

Hello Wendy,

It's great to hear that your son will be spending his study abroad programme in Galway!

The island has great bus and train connections, making most places accessible without a car. Galway itself is a great base for exploring various interesting towns, historical sites, and natural features. Athenry itself is just a 20-minute train ride away, whilst Roscrea would involve a longer journey of at least 3 hours one-way. Tools such as Rome2Rio and Transport for Ireland are really helpful, and allow you to explore the different transport options available, times, and prices.

When it comes to accommodation, it's a good idea to find a place that is conveniently located near bus stops or within walking distance of public transportation. Accommodation in the vicinity of Eyre Square is probably a good bet as it is located close to bus and train stations. You can use our accommodation search tool available here.

In terms of other places to visit from Galway that could interest your son, I would highly recommend a trip to the Burren. This is a stunning karst landscape with unique geological formations and hiking trails. Another option is Connemara National Park which boasts breathtaking landscapes, mountains, and scenic walking trails. Another not-to-miss excursion is a visit to the famous Cliffs of Moher. There are organised day trips available from Galway as well as links by bus. He could also consider visiting the Aran Islands, just off the coast of Galway, which are known for their rugged landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and historical features. Ferries operate from Galway to the islands, allowing for a memorable day trip.

We hope this helps give you and your son some ideas. Don't hesitate to reach back to us if you need more suggestions or tips.

Warm wishes,

Alex
