Hello, My family and I will be in the Kilkenny area for NYE 2023 (into 2024) and are wondering if there are any fun things to do that evening.  Also wondering about what will or will not be open the next day, January 1.  Thanks in advance!

Hi Meg,

It's great that you are planning to spend New Year's Eve in our very own medieval city!

There are a bunch of ways to ring in the new year in Kilkenny. I read that a few hotels were throwing NYE formal parties such as the Ormonde or the New Park (if that's what you are into). Some famous pubs such as the Kytelers Inn or the Pumphouse might also have events. In fact, there are 288 of them in the entire county of Kilkenny, which leaves room for choice.

If you prefer a more relaxed evening, book a table at one of the restaurants offering special New Year's Eve menus for a delightful dinner with loved ones. Explore Kilkenny's enchanting Medieval Mile, taking in the beautifully lit Kilkenny Castle and other historic sites while revelling in the city's festive decorations. Keep an eye out for any public fireworks displays happening in the area to celebrate the countdown to midnight.

On New Year's Day, many businesses operate on reduced hours, but many of the pubs will be lively, as some people opt for going out on NYD as opposed to NYE. That may be a great time to experience the top attractions of the city.

Do you already have other plans for the rest of your trip?

Cathaoir
