Hello
we're planning to visit Ireland in May with a rooftent on the car. We would like to know if it's possible to spend nights outside the campsites? Thanks

Hello Marie,

How nice to hear you're planning a camping trip on our island! ⛺💚

In general, wild camping (outside campsites) is restricted in Ireland for safety and insurance reasons. Some National Parks are happy to provide you with a permit for wild camping within their boundaries. Much of the land is owned privately and you would need the landowner's permission to park here overnight and sleep in your roof tent - some are happy for you to do so if you ask kindly.

Otherwise, there are plenty of campsites to choose from and you could check our website or the page of the Irish Caravan & Camping Council to locate them. You might also find these tips and suggestions helpful!

Do you already have an idea of a route you'd like to take, or places you'd love to visit? 🗺️🧭

Best wishes,
Rebecca ☘️

Bonjour Marie,

You are guaranteed to have stunning morning views with such a tent! That sounds like a really cool way to travel!

As Rebecca said you'd need the landsowner permission to setup your rooftent overnight outside of campsites, but there are indeed alternatives such as the ones listed on the Motorhome craic forum or even the Britstops network (the equivalent of France Passion).

I would however prefer campsites listed on Camping Ireland. Some of them have really gorgeous views, especially along the Wild Atlantic Way. (Look at this one in Clifden, Connemara for instance - my all-time favorite)

Let us know how the planning goes :)

A bientôt,
Antoine
