Hello everyone I’m from Missouri in Untied States. It is my husbands and my dream to visit Ireland. We would like to see and experience as much as possible (at a leisurely pace). We were thinking 2-4 weeks in Ireland. What is the best way to break things up. There are so many places to visit we would like to find a place and branch out and move to another location. We like history, historical sites and nature.

For a 2-4 week trip, start in Dublin for 3-4 days to explore its history and culture. Then, spend 2 days in Kilkenny, 2-3 days in Cork, and 3-4 days in Killarney enjoying the national park and scenic drives. Next, visit Galway for 3-4 days, and wrap up with 2 days in either Limerick or Waterford. This plan lets you experience history, nature, and local charm at a relaxed pace.

Hello Rhonda,

Sounds like you have a great trip brewing. :) I echo Avery in saying that you can certainly explore much of the Emerald Isle in that amount of time, and importantly, without rushing.

Hiring a car would provide the most freedom and flexibility, allowing you to adapt the pace as you go. You could take a look at this post about hiring a car in Ireland which includes links to good resources on the topic. Another viable option is using public transport. You could also utilize tour operators, such as Finn McCools for day trips to sites that may be harder to reach.

Ireland is certainly a great place for history buffs. This page provides a good overview of various sites and a handy map to show their locations. The great thing is that history and nature often go hand in hand so you are able to enjoy both aspects. You can find more information about the different wonders of our nature here.

Avery's suggestion was great for planning time spent in different parts of the island. Once you have identified some must-visit sites and the preferred way to get around, a more tailored plan can be cooked up.

I hope this helps with your planning. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. :)

Hi Rhonda!

How nice that you can start planning with these few suggestions already. Feel free to get back to us depending on what you decide (length of you trip, areas you want to focus on, etc)

In the meantime, feel free to look at our website's Trip Ideas page (you could perhaps combine itineraries to have a plan for your 2-4 weeks with us) or read our members thread in the Destination Ideas section of the forum.

Talk soon!

Hi Rhonda,

A place I like to start is on the Destinations page here. It gives a great breakdown of each region and so can give you a better idea of what there is to see and do - and of what potentially interests you the most! And if you are thinking of travelling around road trip style, there are some great suggestions on this page here

Happy planning!
