Hello,
I am hoping you can help me, I will be in the Republic of Ireland for a few months and I am driving across by ferry in my UK registered car and I am a UK resident.

Do I need to declare my car at customs and pay Motor Tax?

I have tried to find a straight answer online but I can't, I have never been to Ireland before and I want to do it right

Thank you

Hi Mia,

How wonderful that you are going to spend a couple of months in Ireland! 😍

I can think of the following authorities you should get in touch with and inquire about your specific situation directly, to make sure you receive official and valid information. Should the advisor you are in contact with not be able to help you, I recommend you ask which organisation would be best suited to answer your query.

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) in the UK
- Revenue, the Irish Tax and Customs authority

The Citizens Information of Ireland has useful and official information about various matters on their website, including on motor tax - perhaps this article is useful too.

I hope this helps and that you will receive the guidance you require! Should you need any tips or recommendations about places to visit and things to do in Ireland, feel free to share some more about your plans and ideas! 😊

Best wishes
Rebecca 💚
