Hi, I live in Australia and will be travelling to the UK next April.  I will be renting a car at Heathrow London Airport for 74 days, travelling England/Scotland/Wales, then taking the rental car over to Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.  This is permitted by the rental company only on the proviso that I have European Breakdown Cover organised before I go.

The problem is that I have contacted at least 6 providers in the UK who do not offer this cover to non UK residents and/or for rental cars.

The rental company is no help as they said that they don’t get involved in arranging or directing where to go for this type of cover……even though they are the ones requesting it.

Surely I’m not the first Australian who has rented a car in the UK and then taken it to Ireland…..this cover must be available somewhere.

Would anybody out there be able to assist with information regarding this,   I was thinking is this a cover that can be bought in Ireland (instead of the UK) as it is for breakdown cover whilst in Ireland (approx. 20 days).  The car is covered everywhere else.

Appreciate any feedback.

Cheers,

Brian

Hi Brian,

How lovely to hear about your upcoming trip next April! 😍☘️

I'm sorry to learn about the difficulties you are facing with rental car insurance. I imagine this might be linked to the fact that the Republic of Ireland is part of the European Union, which the UK is not. As you suggested, I think it might be a good idea to reach out to insurance providers based in the Republic of Ireland to arrange the European Breakdown Cover. It may even be worth looking into local insurance companies in Australia; sometimes credit card contracts also include some form of travel insurance that might be relevant to your situation. Before signing any insurance contract, I recommend you double-check with the car rental company whether a non-UK insurance provider will be accepted.

Unfortunately, we are not able to recommend specific insurance providers, but you could reach out to the Car Rental Council of Ireland and the British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association for advice.

Lastly, perhaps you might be able to find a different car rental agency who is able to provide the required insurance to cover you for the Republic of Ireland too.

I hope this helps! 💚

Best wishes,
Rebecca
