Destination Wedding Planner in Ireland: A Complete Guide to Planning a Wedding in IrelandPlanning a destination wedding in Ireland from the USA, Canada or another country can seem complicated at first. Where should you get married? Can you legally marry in Ireland? How much does a wedding in Ireland cost? Which suppliers do you need? What happens if it rains? And how do you organize everything when you live thousands of miles away?
The good news is that a destination wedding in Ireland can be much easier to plan than many couples expect.
We are
Eloping in Ireland, an Ireland-based destination wedding and elopement planning team. We have been planning weddings throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland since 2014 and have helped organize more than 1,500 weddings, elopements and vow renewals, including celebrations for couples traveling from the USA, Canada and around the world.
This guide answers some of the most common questions couples ask when searching for a destination wedding planner in Ireland and explains what you should know before planning your wedding here.
Can you plan a destination wedding in Ireland from the USA or Canada?Yes. Couples living in the USA, Canada and other countries regularly plan destination weddings in Ireland without needing to make multiple planning trips beforehand.
A good Ireland-based wedding planner can help you choose a ceremony location, coordinate local wedding suppliers, understand travel times and logistics, create a wedding-day timeline and help you understand the Irish marriage process.
Many of our couples don't visit their ceremony location until they arrive in Ireland for their wedding.
If you're beginning your research, our
complete guide to eloping in Ireland explains the entire process from choosing a location through to the wedding day.
What does a destination wedding planner in Ireland actually do?A destination wedding planner acts as your local point of contact in Ireland.
- choosing your wedding or ceremony location
- photographers and videographers
- celebrants and officiants
- hair and makeup
- bouquets and flowers
- ceremony musicians
- chauffeur transportation
- guest transportation
- ceremony arrangements
- wedding-day timelines
- restaurants and traditional Irish pubs
- indoor backup locations
- accommodation suggestions
- local logistics
- guidance on the legal marriage process
This becomes particularly important when you're planning from another country.
Something that looks close on a map may involve a much longer journey on Irish roads. A spectacular outdoor location may have difficult access for elderly guests. A beautiful ceremony location may have restrictions that aren't obvious when researching online.
Why choose a wedding planner who is actually based in Ireland? If you're planning a destination wedding from overseas, it is worth checking where your wedding planner is actually based.
An Ireland-based planner works directly with local venues and suppliers and understands the practical realities of holding weddings at Irish locations.
That includes weather, access, driving times, location restrictions, guest logistics, indoor alternatives and which locations work best at different times of year.
At Eloping in Ireland, our planning team is based here in Ireland. We've been planning weddings here since 2014.For couples in America or Canada, that means you can plan from home while your planner is already on the ground in Ireland.
Local knowledge can make a major difference.
Can Americans and Canadians legally get married in Ireland?Yes. You do not have to be an Irish citizen or resident to legally marry in the Republic of Ireland.
There is, however, a legal process that needs to be completed.
Couples getting legally married in the Republic of Ireland must give at least three months' notice to the Civil Registration Service. Couples living outside Ireland can contact the Civil Registration Service about giving notification from overseas, but they will still need to meet the Registrar in Ireland before the ceremony.
A legal marriage must also be performed by a registered solemnizer and requires two witnesses.
Because circumstances can differ between couples, always confirm the current requirements directly with the relevant Irish authorities.
We have a separate guide explaining the
legal requirements for getting married in Ireland.
Is getting married in Northern Ireland different?Yes, and this is an important distinction for international couples.
The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland have separate marriage systems and legal requirements.
For example, couples considering a wedding at Dunluce Castle or another location in Northern Ireland need to follow the Northern Ireland marriage process rather than the Republic of Ireland process.
Northern Ireland generally requires marriage notice to be submitted within the 12 months before the wedding. The statutory minimum notice period is 28 days, although couples traveling internationally should begin the process considerably earlier.
Immigration and visa requirements may also apply to international couples traveling to Northern Ireland specifically to marry.
We explain the process separately in our guide to
getting legally married in Northern Ireland.
Legal wedding or symbolic ceremony in Ireland? Both are possible.
Some international couples choose to complete the legal process in Ireland and have their marriage officially recognized here.
Others complete the legal paperwork at home and have a symbolic wedding ceremony in Ireland.
A symbolic ceremony can offer more flexibility regarding ceremony location, timing and the style of the ceremony because it does not have to satisfy the same requirements as a legal marriage ceremony.
Neither option is automatically better.
The right choice depends on the experience you want, where you want to hold your ceremony and how much time you'll have in Ireland.
What are the best places for a destination wedding in Ireland? One of Ireland's biggest advantages as a wedding destination is the variety of locations available within a relatively small country.
Popular options include:
Cliffs and coastlines — ideal for couples dreaming of dramatic Atlantic scenery.
Irish castles — from impressive castle hotels to historic castle ruins.
Ancient ruins — atmospheric settings for intimate ceremonies surrounded by Irish history.
National parks and lakes — beautiful choices for couples who prefer mountains, woodland and natural scenery.
Country houses and castle hotels — particularly useful for couples bringing guests and wanting accommodation, dinner and their ceremony in one general area.
Traditional Irish pubs — a relaxed way to celebrate after the ceremony and one of the experiences international guests often associate most strongly with Ireland.

20 best places to elope in Ireland.
Cliffs of Moher destination weddingsThe Cliffs of Moher area is one of the locations we are asked about most frequently by American and Canadian couples.
The attraction is obvious: huge Atlantic views, dramatic cliffs and unmistakably Irish scenery.
However, choosing the right ceremony location around the Cliffs of Moher is important.
Privacy, crowds, accessibility, weather and photography opportunities can vary significantly depending on exactly where you hold your ceremony.
Our ceremonies at Hags Head offer couples private access and an indoor weather backup, which can make planning a cliff wedding considerably easier.

Castle weddings in IrelandGetting married in an Irish castle is another of the most popular requests we receive.
But "castle wedding" can mean very different things.
Some couples want a luxury castle hotel with accommodation and dinner for their guests. Others imagine an intimate ceremony inside an ancient castle ruin.
Both can create an incredible experience, but they suit different wedding styles and guest numbers.
Explore our
Irish castle wedding options if a castle is at the top of your list.
How many guests can you have at a small destination wedding in Ireland? There is no single number that defines a small destination wedding.
We've planned everything from two-person elopements with no guests to intimate weddings with groups of family and friends.
For many couples, somewhere between approximately 10 and 30 guests offers a great balance. It is large enough to share the experience with the people closest to you while remaining small enough to use some of Ireland's more unusual ceremony locations.
Guest count can also influence your choice of venue, transportation, accommodation and indoor weather backup.
This is why deciding roughly how many people you expect to invite is one of the most useful early planning decisions you can make.
How much does a destination wedding in Ireland cost? There isn't one standard price because the cost depends on your location, guest count and what you want included.
A simple couple-only elopement will naturally cost much less than a destination wedding with guests, extensive photography, videography, flowers, musicians, transportation and a reception.
At Eloping in Ireland, our couple-only Lite elopement packages currently start from €2,400, while larger packages and customized weddings vary depending on location and inclusions.
When comparing Ireland wedding packages, don't look only at the headline price.
- planning
- ceremony location
- location fees
- photographer and photography hours
- celebrant
- videographer
- flowers
- hair and makeup
- chauffeur
- live ceremony music
- guest transportation
- indoor weather backup
- additional guest charges
- taxes and fees
Two packages with similar prices can offer very different levels of service.
Our
Ireland elopement packages guide explains the different options and current starting prices in more detail.
Do destination wedding packages in Ireland include everything? Not necessarily.
The term "all-inclusive wedding package" can mean different things depending on the company or venue offering it.
One package might include photography, flowers, hair and makeup, transportation and a celebrant. Another may include only the venue, ceremony and basic planning.
Always compare the actual inclusions rather than the description used to market the package.
You should also check whether flights, accommodation, meals, government fees, location fees and optional wedding suppliers are included or paid separately.
Transparency is particularly important when comparing destination wedding planners because the cheapest starting price isn't always the least expensive final wedding.
Can you customize a destination wedding in Ireland?Absolutely.
A package should be a starting point rather than forcing every couple to have exactly the same wedding.
- photography coverage
- videography
- ceremony style
- flowers
- hair and makeup
- ceremony music
- transportation
- additional photography locations
- dinner or pub celebrations
- guest transportation
- accommodation
At Eloping in Ireland, couples also pay wedding vendors directly rather than having all supplier payments bundled invisibly into one payment to us.
We believe that provides greater transparency and flexibility.
What happens if it rains on your wedding day in Ireland? This is one of the most common questions we hear.
Ireland's weather is changeable, so outdoor weddings should always be planned with flexibility in mind.
Rain doesn't necessarily ruin an Irish wedding — some of our favorite photographs have been created in dramatic Irish weather — but a good plan should never depend entirely on perfect conditions.
For outdoor ceremonies, ask your planner:
What is the indoor backup?Don't settle for "we'll figure something out."
Where possible, you should know the alternative before your wedding day.
This is particularly important if you're bringing children, elderly relatives or guests with limited mobility.
What is the best time of year for a destination wedding in Ireland?Ireland can host weddings throughout the year, but every season offers a different experience.
Spring brings longer days, fresh landscapes and increasing daylight.
Summer provides the longest evenings and is especially popular for outdoor ceremonies.
Fall can offer beautiful colors and a quieter atmosphere.
Winter works particularly well for castles, intimate venues and couples who prefer a cozy Irish wedding experience.
There is no month that guarantees dry weather in Ireland, so choosing your date should be about more than simply trying to avoid rain.
Consider daylight, guest travel, location availability, accommodation and the type of scenery you want.
How far in advance should you plan a destination wedding in Ireland? There is no single correct timeline.
Some couples contact us one or two years before their wedding, while others plan much closer to the date.
We specialize in smaller weddings and elopements, so shorter planning timelines can sometimes be possible. We've organized weddings within a few weeks and, in exceptional circumstances, even less.
However, if you have a specific date, location, photographer or venue in mind, earlier is better.
For a legal wedding, the marriage notification requirements also need to be factored into your timeline.
What wedding vendors will you need in Ireland? This depends entirely on the wedding you want.
- wedding planner
- photographer
- videographer
- celebrant or solemnizer
- hair stylist
- makeup artist
- florist
- chauffeur
- ceremony musician
- venue
- restaurant or pub
- guest transportation
You don't necessarily need all of them.
One of the advantages of a small destination wedding is being able to spend your budget on the parts of the day that genuinely matter to you.
How do you choose the right destination wedding planner in Ireland? Before choosing a wedding planner in Ireland, ask some practical questions.
Are they actually based in Ireland?
How long have they been planning weddings here?
Do they regularly work with couples from the USA and Canada?
Do they have recent independent reviews?
How many weddings have they actually planned?
Are prices and package inclusions clear?
Can packages be customized?
What happens if a supplier becomes unavailable?
What happens if the weather changes?
Do you have a choice of wedding vendors?
Will they help you understand the legal marriage process? These questions tell you much more than simply comparing photographs on Instagram.
Do you need to visit Ireland before your destination wedding?Usually, no.
Some couples choose to visit Ireland beforehand, but it isn't essential when you have a local planning team.
A planner can help with location selection, suppliers, schedules and logistics remotely.
This is especially useful for couples in the USA and Canada who may not want the expense of making a separate planning trip across the Atlantic.
For many couples, their first visit to the actual ceremony location is on or immediately before their wedding trip.
Elopement or small destination wedding: which is better? An elopement in Ireland doesn't have to mean secretly getting married without telling anyone.
Modern elopements can include parents, siblings, children and a small group of close friends.
The difference is usually about scale and experience.
A traditional destination wedding may revolve around a larger guest list and reception. An intimate wedding or elopement places more emphasis on the couple, the ceremony, the location and the experience of being in Ireland.
Neither is better.
Choose the version that feels most like you.
Frequently asked questions about destination weddings in IrelandCan US citizens get married in Ireland?Yes. US citizens can legally marry in Ireland provided they meet the Irish legal marriage requirements. There is no requirement to be an Irish citizen or resident.
Can Canadian citizens get married in Ireland?Yes. Canadian couples can also legally marry in Ireland provided they complete the required Irish marriage process.
Do we need an Ireland wedding planner? It isn't legally required, but a local planner can be particularly valuable when you're organizing a wedding from overseas and coordinating Irish locations, suppliers, transportation and legal arrangements.
Can we elope in Ireland with no guests?Yes. Couple-only elopements are very popular, and if required, witnesses can often be arranged.
Can we bring family and friends?Absolutely. Many couples have a small destination wedding with parents, children, siblings or close friends.
Can we have a legal ceremony at a castle or outdoor location?Potentially, but legal ceremony requirements depend on the jurisdiction, ceremony type, location and solemnizer. Always check the specific requirements before choosing a location solely on the assumption that a legal ceremony can take place there.
What if we don't want to legally marry in Ireland? You can complete the legal marriage at home and have a symbolic ceremony in Ireland instead.
Can we have a traditional Irish element in our ceremony?Yes. Couples often incorporate Irish traditions such as Celtic handfasting, traditional Irish music or other personal connections to Irish heritage.
Is Ireland good for a honeymoon after the wedding?Yes. One major advantage of a destination wedding in Ireland is that your wedding trip can naturally become your honeymoon. Couples can travel around Ireland after the ceremony rather than immediately flying somewhere else.
