From Dublin to Donegal

Hi,
I will be traveling by car from Dublin, stopping overnight in Cavan, then heading to Donegal.  The map shows traveling through Northern Ireland.  As a US citizen should I get an ETA for the road trip going into Northern Ireland or is it not necessary since we are not sight seeing/stating there?
