Hi everyone,I’m planning a trip to Ireland around New Year and just wondering if that’s a good time to visit. I’d love to see the festive lights, maybe enjoy a few traditional pubs and join some local celebrations as the year changes. Do Dublin or Cork have a nice atmosphere at that time, or would you recommend smaller towns for a cozier feel? Also are things mostly open between Christmas and New Year or should I expect some closures?
Any tips on where to go or what not to miss would be really helpful.
Thanks! :)

Hi Bob,

It's lovely to hear that you are planning a trip over to see us around the New Year! Things are definitely still in the festive mood, and celebrations for the countdown will be in place. We have an article on Dublin's New Year on our website that will give you some idea of what to expect in the city. Cork City would have a similar theme running with music and activities for the whole family. Many smaller cities and towns have events too, so if it's a cozier feel, then yes, why not try these as well. 🎄
There is an existing community post on Christmastime that highlights the days around then. All places close on Christmas Day, except the main hotels. St Stephen's Day on the 26th will also be a public holiday, so lots of attractions, shops, etc., won't be open but will open after that. I would suggest checking each place to find out their opening times over the week, most will be open, but possibly on reduced times. The Christmas lights will be on throughout this period, so a walk in any city or town will feel wonderful. It's a great chance to stroll around and take in many of the walks and parks that you will find, and the coastal towns and villages around Dublin will be well worth a visit.
I hope this gives you some ideas. Feel free to let us know if there is anything in particular that you would like to see and do.
