Hi,

My girlfriend and I are currently planning a road trip through Ireland in April or May.
As well as visiting many other popular sights and hidden gems, we would also like to see the Cliffs of Moher. As we love adventure and quiet nature, simply driving to the visitor centre, paying a lot of money, and watching the cliffs from the platforms alongside lots of other people is not necessarily our preferred option.

I found a car park in the south (Liscannor) and wanted to plan a hike from Hag's Head along the cliffs to the visitor centre. Unfortunately, several sources mentioned that this trail (and also the one leading from Doolin to the visitor centre) is closed due to safety concerns. However, I also found some sources that stated the trail would reopen in 2026.
I could not find any verified information about whether both sections are still closed and, if so, when they will reopen. It would be a real shame if we couldn't walk along the cliffs away from the crowds of tourists.

Has anyone heard anything recently about the coastal walk or the plans for 2026?
Many thanks in advance for any information or advice you can offer!

Best regards,
Thomas from Austria

Hello Thomas,

It's really great to hear about your plans, and I love your approach to truly exploring Ireland's natural sites! 🥾🌿

Unfortunately, the information about the current closure of both trails from Liscannor and Doolin to/from the Cliffs of Moher (Visitor Experience Centre) is true. I'm not aware of official updates on plans to reopen the paths this year either. The good news is that a large (and stunningly beautiful) section of the path between Doolin and the Cliffs of Moher is open, and perhaps it is an option for you both to walk the path from Doolin to where it ends at the 'Surfers Path', and then return. I'm afraid the last section of this path until the visitor centre is not accessible, but you will already be enjoying the marvellous views of coast and cliffs leading up to the area of the visitor centre, and especially from where the path ends. Additionally, there's also the option to catch a local bus to the visitor centre (this way avoiding any visitor fees other than the bus fare) if you'd like to enjoy the Cliffs from their most popular viewpoint, and wander the surrounding area.

You can find all relevant and official information on this website - I expect that any announcements regarding the reopening of either path will be made available here too, once available. Of course, you could also get in touch with the Visitor Experience Centre and inquire about any updates directly.

I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to respond if you have any more questions. 😊

I'm curious which other spots on the island have made it onto your bucket list!? If you need any more inspiration, this forum should provide you with plenty, and browsing this website is always a good idea too! 😉

Happy planning!
