Dunluce Castle is one of those places that almost doesn’t feel real when you see it for the first time. Sitting right on the edge of the cliffs along the north coast of Northern Ireland, it’s one of the most dramatic and atmospheric locations on the island, and it’s easy to see why so many couples ask about getting married there.

I get asked quite often if you can actually have a wedding or elope at Dunluce Castle, so I thought I’d explain how it works from a local perspective.

The short answer is yes,  you can have a ceremony at Dunluce Castle, but it does need to be planned in advance. The castle is a protected historic site, so you can’t simply turn up and hold a ceremony without permission. Access, availability, and how ceremonies are allowed can vary, so it’s always worth checking ahead of time rather than assuming it’s possible on the day.

Because of the nature of the location, Dunluce works best for smaller weddings or elopements. It’s not a venue for large groups or all-day celebrations, but for couples looking for something intimate and meaningful, it can be an incredible setting.

Most couples who choose Dunluce Castle opt for a symbolic ceremony. Legal ceremonies in Northern Ireland can be arranged, but they involve more paperwork and planning, so many couples complete the legal side at home and then have their actual ceremony here, overlooking the Atlantic. It keeps things simple and allows you to focus on the experience rather than the logistics.

One thing to keep in mind is the weather. The north coast is quite exposed, and conditions can change quickly. It’s often windy, sometimes misty, and occasionally you’ll get completely clear skies. That unpredictability is part of what makes the area so special, and it can create a really unique atmosphere on the day.

What makes Dunluce stand out compared to other locations in Ireland is the setting itself. The castle ruins, the cliffs, and the Atlantic all come together in a way that feels very cinematic. Many people recognise it from Game of Thrones, which has made it especially popular with visitors coming from the U.S., but even without that connection, it’s one of the most striking places you can visit along the Causeway Coast. If you’re still exploring options, I’ve also put together a broader guide on eloping in Ireland which may help: Ireland's ultimate guides page for eloping to Ireland

Most couples don’t just stay at the castle for the full day. The north coast has a lot to offer within a short distance, so it’s quite common to combine Dunluce with nearby locations like Ballintoy Harbour, the Giant’s Causeway, or quieter stretches of coastline for photos and exploring. This gives you a much more relaxed and varied experience rather than being based in one spot.

There are also some beautiful private areas and land close to the castle that can offer more space and privacy for a ceremony, which can make a big difference if you’re looking for something more relaxed. These do need to be arranged in advance, but it can really elevate the experience compared to the main public areas.

Logistically, it’s all very manageable, but it helps to have a rough plan for timing and movement between locations, especially during the busier months when the area can get more visitors.

If it helps, I run a planning service called Ireland Elopements & Co, where I work with couples travelling from abroad to organise elopements in locations like Dunluce Castle and along the north coast. I take care of everything from location planning and timelines to arranging access, private land, suppliers and the overall flow of the day, so it all feels relaxed and easy.

I’ve also put together a more detailed guide specifically on Dunluce Castle elopements which covers the location, planning options and how it all works if you’re considering it: How to elope at Dunluce Castle really is one of those locations that feels more like an experience than just a place. If you’re looking for something a bit different, especially along the north coast of Northern Ireland, it’s definitely worth considering.

If anyone has any questions about getting married at Dunluce Castle, planning an elopement in Northern Ireland, or even just travelling over from the U.S. to get married here, feel free to ask. I’m always happy to help where I can. Through Ireland Elopements & Co, I work with couples from abroad to plan relaxed, scenic elopements across Ireland and Northern Ireland, so if you’re in the early stages of planning, don’t hesitate to reach out.
