Hi everyone!
  • Newgrange: Seeing how people over 5,000 years ago aligned this site with the winter solstice would completely change how students view ancient societies.
  • Dublin (General Post Office): Standing where the Easter Rising took place feels like one of those moments that would make history stick in a much deeper way.
  • Cliffs of Moher: Not just for the views, but for connecting to the stories of emigration during the Great Famine and imagining what that experience felt like. As a teacher, I’ve found that students remember places and stories far more than anything from a textbook. I’d love to hear from others
What's one place in Ireland that gave you a completely new perspective on its history?

Hi Sydney,

I love this idea! Are you planning to visit the island of Ireland with a group of students or is it more of a brainstorm?

I feel like so many places on the island just breath history, but these 3 spring to mind when thinking about students experiencing history and places that could make a real impression on them:
  • Kilmainham Gaol: This place was important at different times during Irish history and during their guided tour, they take you through each and every one. They give you names and stories of important people who've been in there, which makes its history real visible.
  • Glendalough monastic site: A completely different time in history (6th century), which shows how different places were important during different eras. I feel like this place might be interesting for students because they get to roam around, explore and really feel history all around them.
  • Rock of Cashel: This castle has been important throughout history and that shows. When joining their guided tour, the fascinating history really comes alive.
Here are more historic landmarks that deserve a place on this list.

I'm curious what other can add to this list!
