Hello, everyone!
I’m currently researching my paternal family tree, and I’m hoping to trace additional family members related to my 3rd great-grandfather, Michael Ryan (born around 1798 in Ireland). Here’s what I know so far:
Michael Ryan was born around 1798 in Ireland. He married Mary Hanley (1801–1863) around 1825 in Ireland.Michael passed away on 14 September 1840 in an accident at Newport Docks (Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales) and was buried at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Stow Hill, Newport, on 19 September 1840.
Michael and Mary had several children:
John (Bryan) Ryan (1814–1867) – Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.
Patrick Ryan (1824–1872) – Born in Rusheen, Borrisoleigh, Tipperary, Ireland.
Mary Ann Ryan (1829–1881) – Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.
Ellen Ryan/Bryan (1831–1849) – Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.
Sarah Ryan (1832–1862) – Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.
Bridgett Ryan (1835–1872) – Born in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.

I’m trying to trace further information about Michael’s ancestors and descendants, and I’d love to connect with anyone researching these names or places.
Questions I have:
Are there any records (e.g., parish, church, or census records) that could help me learn more about Michael’s parents or his early life in Ireland?
Have you come across any connections to the Ryan, Hanley, or Bryan families in Newport, Monmouthshire or Borrisoleigh, Tipperary?
Is anyone researching similar family lines, or does anyone have resources to suggest, such as immigration/emigration records, birth/marriage/death certificates, or family trees that may be connected?

Any advice, resources, or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi Paul, great to have you here.

You’ve already done some great digging on your Ryan line. Ryan is very common in Ireland, so every little detail helps, and you’ve gathered quite a few good ones to work from. Since you’ve got Rusheen, Borrisoleigh in Tipperary as a likely place of origin, plus a marriage in the mid‑1820s, the best place to start is usually the parish records.

The Catholic Parish Registers (available free through the National Library of Ireland) cover baptisms and marriages for that area and might give you a glimpse of Michael’s parents or siblings.

It would be worth to look into Virtual Treasury for fragments of pre‑1922 records. Because several of the children were born in Newport, the Welsh side can offer clues too.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Stow Hill and local newspapers around the time of Michael’s accident sometimes mention relatives or origins back in Ireland. If you’re hoping to connect with others researching the same names, places like Find My Past, and Ireland Reaching Out are great for spotting cousins you didn’t know you had.

Wishing you the very best with the search, Paul. I'm hoping the next clue is just waiting to be found, and I would really appreciate it if you could share any findings here.

Best wishes,

Vivian
