We will be traveling to Ireland in September and October of 2026. We will be renting a car. We have a valid handicap (disabled) parking permit from the USA. Will this permit be valid in Ireland? Also do we have to pay for parking if we have the disabled parking permit?
Thank you

Hi Bradley,

It's so exciting to hear that you're planning a visit to our island in 2026. Having your own transport is a great way to see the island at your own pace.

As long as your permit features the international symbol (featuring the international wheelchair symbol), it will be recognised and valid for use while you are in Ireland. Regarding parking fees, it's important to note that regulations can change depending on where you are. While many local councils allow for free on-street parking in designated disabled bays, this isn't always the case for private car parks, which usually still require payment. I’d recommend checking the local signage whenever you park to be sure.

There is also a very helpful article about accessibility on the official website, which I would highly recommend checking out. It has a ton of information with links to official sources like Transport for Ireland and the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland, where you can find even more specifics on using your permit.

I do hope this helps!
