Ireland is one of those places where there really isn’t a bad time to elope, but the experience can be very different depending on the month you choose. From the long evenings and vibrant landscapes of summer to the quieter locations, softer light and changing colours of autumn, every season brings something a little different.
For couples travelling from overseas and eloping in Ireland, choosing when to come is often one of the first big decisions. Irish weather is famously unpredictable, so rather than searching for a month that guarantees sunshine, it’s usually better to think about daylight, crowds, scenery, photography and the overall experience you want from your day.
We’ve put together a more detailed guide to the best time of year to elope in Ireland covering Ireland’s weather and seasons in much more detail, but here’s a quick look at what couples can generally expect throughout the year.
Spring: March to May
Spring is a lovely time for an Ireland elopement, particularly from April onwards. The days are getting longer, the landscape is becoming greener and many of Ireland’s popular locations are still relatively quiet compared with summer.
The weather can be changeable, but that’s Ireland at almost any time of year. Having a flexible timeline and a good backup plan is usually more important than trying to find a month with guaranteed sunshine.
Summer: June to August
Summer brings Ireland’s longest days, with plenty of evening light for exploring and photography after your ceremony.
It’s also peak visitor season, particularly around famous locations such as the Cliffs of Moher, Killarney and parts of the Dingle Peninsula. That doesn’t mean you should avoid these places.
Choosing the right time of day, considering a weekday ceremony and knowing some quieter alternatives can make an enormous difference.
Autumn: September and October
September and early October are two of my favourite times for elopements in Ireland.
There is still plenty of daylight, the busiest part of the tourist season has passed and the landscape begins to take on beautiful autumn tones. The softer light can also be fantastic for photography.
Winter: November to February
Winter elopements can be incredibly atmospheric, but they require a little more planning.
Days are much shorter and the weather can be unpredictable, so your ceremony time and the distance between locations become particularly important. For couples who don't mind embracing the elements, though, Ireland in winter can feel wonderfully wild and intimate.
So, what is the best month to elope in Ireland?
There isn't one answer for every couple.
For a balance of daylight, fewer crowds and flexibility, I particularly like April, May, September and early October. Couples who want long evenings and more time to explore several locations may prefer June or July.
Where you choose to elope matters too. The experience can be completely different between Kerry, Dingle, the Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, West Cork, Sligo and Northern Ireland and some locations work particularly well at certain times of year.
The biggest thing I’ve learned from planning and photographing elopements around Ireland is not to build the day around a perfect weather forecast. Build in flexibility, choose locations that suit the season and have a plan that can adapt if Ireland decides to give you four seasons in an afternoon.
