February 1 is the feast day of one of Ireland's best loved saints, St Brigid.  If you grew up in Ireland, no doubt you have memories of trying to make her famous cross made from rushes!

One of my favourite (and not well known) facts about Brigid is that she was probably the world's first suffragette. The women of Ireland had grown tired of waiting for their "intended" to propose.  Brigid approach St Patrick to discuss the delicate matter, and suggested that he might do something about it.  So he authorized that for one day every 4 years - Leap Day, 29 February - ladies can ask men to marry them.  There's one for the pub quiz ;)

There are many holy wells around Ireland dedicated to St Brigid, probably the most famous is located close to the Cliffs of Moher, just outside Liscannor village in Co. Clare.
