Absolutely. While Trinity does get a lot of deserved attention, there are lots of other great universities dotted around the island, each with a unique feel and great sights.
Just outside Dublin in County Kildare is Maynooth University. Students here have compared the glorious South Campus with its ivy-clad buildings, pretty parks and tree-lined avenues to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Visit the towering cathedral to hear the choir sing a hymn or two or slip down a hidden pathway off the main park – where the trees are planted diagonally to create a perfect triangle – to the hidden graveyard where Maynooth’s most famous alumni rest.
Located just a stone’s throw from the city centre, University College Cork (UCC) is right on the River Lee – walking through the front gate at summer is a real treat, as the willows dip into the gurgling estuaries and the sun beats down on the sleepy campus. A good way to get to know the place is to take a walking tour, which will bring you through the Gothic-Revival quadrangle into the Great Hall (described by the Irish Examiner newspaper as “one of the most magnificent rooms in Ireland”) and past the Ogham stones, which date from the 5th-7th century.
Finally, Queen’s University in Belfast is definitely a must-see. At nearly 200 years old, the campus has a sense of regality and magnificence thanks to its beautiful red-brick buildings, which are surrounded by magnolia trees. Chat with locals in the shade of the Lanyon Building, and watch as Belfast bustles past you on the street.
