Question from Sherri Stone Wiegman:

I am at a deadend with finding more information out about my ggggggreatgrandfather, William Cotten. He was married to Elizabeth Kingkade and their son James Cotton was born in 1748. I have his baptismal certificate from St. Anne's parish in Belfast but sadly nothing else on Wm. Or Elizabeth. Where would you point me to look?

Answer from Irish Family History Centre:

Research for such an early time frame will rely a great deal on what other information you have about the family, especially William and Elizabeth. Do you know their occupation? their religious denominations? I assume the St. Anne's parish you mention is the Anglican or Church of Ireland church? Have you looked at all their surviving records? The other major resource to take this further back in time is land records, specifically the records in the Registry of Deeds in Dublin.
